Peace Pilgrim's Mail and Newsletters
Peace PIlgrim's correspondence with followers was steady and voluminous. During her 28 years of wandering, letters to be answered were always among the few items she carried in her tunic pockets. She answered every letter (sent care of her sister, Helene Norman Young in Cologne, NJ) as quickly as possible to keep from getting overburdened with mail.
Among the first letters she wrote were three weeks after the Jan. 1, 1953 start of her pilgrimage:
- Jan. 22, 1953 letter to her sister and family
- Jan. 22, 1953 letter to her niece
She also sent regular updates to friends, such as this 1969 letter.
PEACE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS
In addition to personal correspondence, Peace Pilgrim also produced 19 issues of her newsletter, Peace Pilgrim's Progress, between 1953 and 1980. Her mailing list grew over the years and numbered in the thousands at the time of her death in 1981. She had a network of friends across the country who would mimeograph and mail these newsletters.
